What a way to spend a Sunday night…sitting in the atmospheric Tanks Arts Centre about to see Julia Stone. Best known as one half of the duo “Angus and Julia Stone” whose album “Down The Road” was a smash.
Her new album “ By The Horns” is dark and brooding and has allowed Julia Stone to step out on her own.
Julia Stone’s attitude seems a bit more rock n roll dressed all in black with black patent leather boots and brandishing an electric guitar for a number of here songs including “It’s All Okay”
Her set started with “ The Shit That They’re Feeding you” and then “Bloodbuzz Ohio” which for me is one of the best songs of her new album.
“And The boys” was treated to a more up tempo and solid sounds that emanated some serious power and angst.
The songs interspersed with stories about the songs allowed the audience to form a connection with Stone and unbelievably her unlucky adventures in love.
“ you’re the one that I want” from the movie Grease was totally transformed by her as was Fleetwood Mac’s classic “ dreams” which had a fantastic trumpet solo that allowed stone to make this song her own.
The funniest moment of the night was when “Mango Tree” was requested….after a quick lesson to the band on how the song went, all went fine until the second verse when stone realised “ I didn’t sing on this verse…I usually just danced” these lyrics were then transformed into
“Something about a bike..
And riding down the street….
Then he plants a tree…”
This was a powerful though short set by Julia Stone leaving the crowd wanting more….
